Folk Garland
Folk Garland
Crochet meets embroidery in this decorative garland, bringing an abundance of colour and texture to brighten any room. Made using Ricorumi DK 100% cotton and 3.5mm hook this pattern is all about playing with colour and any DK weight cotton can be used to achieve a similar effect. Each motif is worked in the round and embellished with simple embroidery stitches that completely transform the crochet. This is the perfect project to explore the delights of merging crochet and embroidery without needing to be an expert in all the stitches.
Please note this listing is for crochet pattern only and does not illustrate how to embroider. The embroidery stitches used are simple and easy to learn and include straight stitch or running stitch and the French knot. Search these terms on Youtube and you will find some excellent tutorials that will have you working them in no time at all!
Top Embroidery Tips for the absolute beginner
Use a sharp embroidery needle so that you can work into the actual crochet stitches and not into the spaces. This holds the embroidery in place. Don’t pull your work too tight as it will pucker the crochet base and distort the shape of the crochet stitches. Having said all of this it is also possible to use the structure of the crochet stitches to inform the embroidery stitches especially when working with a tight cotton crochet base. In all likelihood the back of your work will be a little messy (or in my case an absolute pickle!) so I tend to only embroider onto things I know will be viewed from the right side only. It is possible to make it neat on the back by sewing a patch of fabric over it but to be honest I find it a bit of a faff so I avoid needing to see it from both sides wherever possible!

The pattern is worked in the round, I recommend it as a confident beginner / intermediate pattern.
